The FA Cup is one of English soccer’s most treasured prizes and has many David and Goliath type stories. Liverpool will be looking to avoid being another Goliath in the FA Cup as they travel to Bournemouth in the 4th round of the FA Cup.
Liverpool FC manager Brendan Rodgers will have some selection headaches for this match. He will try to balance not fielding a youth team like West Ham in the 3rd round and trying to rest key players.
With a thin squad, Liverpool do not have too many options. With an important match against local rivals Everton three days later, the selection for this match is critical.
Rodgers highlights the importance of the match when he told the Liverpool Echo, “It’s always been the priority to arrive in there (the top four), but the history of this club is built on winning trophies. It’s a competition we want to do well in and this game is important for us.”
Last weekend, Liverpool went with a 4-4-2 and got pushed back. The second they reverted back to a 4-3-3 they were more successful and had many more opportunities on goal.
Brad Jones will be in goal for Liverpool despite Simon Mignolet’s confidence crisis. In regards to his faith for the Belgian stopper Rodgers said, “I’ve certainly never lost faith in him and having him here has reinforced all the reasons we wanted him. He’s got a first-class mentality and is only going to improve.”
Back in defense for him will be a promising Brad Smith at leftback. Injuries and lack of form have seen Brad Smith up to the starting eleven. The centerback pairing may see Martin Kelly and Kolo Toure. Jon Flanagan may return from injury to start at rightback.
The midfield trio will see Jordan Henderson and Joe Allen anchor right in front of the back four. Luis Alberto may be given a chance and would be the most advanced of the three.
Alberto could be creating chances for Jordan Ibe, Daniel Sturridge, and Raheem Sterling.
Lineup: Jones, Flanagan, Kelly, Toure, Smith, Henderson, Allen, Alberto, Ibe, Sturridge, Sterling
Subs: Ward, Aspas, Suarez, Gerrard, Skrtel, Coutinho, Rossiter
With the aforementioned lineup, Rodgers will rest the likes of Gerrard, Suarez and Coutinho. A welcome return for local lad Jon Flanagan should be in store. The likes of Brad Smith, Luis Alberto and Jordan Ibe will be given a chance to impress.
