John Barnes : Brendan Rodgers can fit players into his philosophy and his method

It seems that there is a never-ending pot of cash sitting in the Anfield boardroom at the moment. Next to it sits a list of names that boss, Brendan Rodgers, would like to add to his squad for next season. One might think that a transfer kitty such as those found at the end of a rainbow would be able to bring with it some household names. Some proven world-class talent that gets the fans excited and sends shivers through opposition teams just at the sound of their name.

But despite the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Karim Benzema being linked with moves to Merseyside it seems that Rodgers is spending his cash in other ways. Why this surprises us I am not sure. The Northern Irishman prides himself on taking young, hungry, talented footballers and turning them in to world stars. Daniel Sturridge, Jordan Henderson, John Flanagan and Coutinho were all stalling in the football world before Rodgers molded them in the players they are now.

Now the Anfield faithful are hoping that this special brand of magic continues with new signings Emre Can and Lazar Markovic. But while some of us still pray for at least one marquee arrival to help ease the burden from the loss of Luis Suarez, reds legend, John Barnes, says that he likes the way that Rodgers is doing business.

“A lot of people may not have heard of them, very much like Philippe Coutinho, but we don’t necessarily need to buy superstar players,” Barnes told talkSPORT.

“Certain clubs, like Man City and Chelsea, need to sign big superstar players, whereas Brendan Rodgers can fit players into his philosophy and his method.

“They might be players we haven’t heard of and are left thinking, ‘well why is he signing him because he is not a household name’. I am happy with that.”

Liverpool are still chasing Spanish left back, Alberto Moreno, continuing on the young and hungry trend. But with around four weeks left until the transfer window is closed and locked until after Christmas I am hoping that a Karim Benzema could still turn up on our doorstep.
