With a move for Southampton defender, Dejan Lovren, still up in the air and Kolo Toure looking at a move to Turkish club, Trabzonspor, it seems Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers may make a shock bid for versatile Manchester City defender, Micah Richards.
Rodgers is desperate to sure up a defence that leaked over 50 goals last season. Reports in the UK suggest that the 26 year old England international is un happy at not being first choice at City and would jump at the chance of a move to Anfield.
“Liverpool are in pole position to sign Micah Richards who is leaving Man City this summer,” reported Britain’s Daily Mirror.
“The Premier League champions are listening to offers for defender Richards who has only 12 months left on his contract. The versatile defender, 26, capped 13 times by England, only started two League games under Manuel Pellegrini last season.”
For me it seems like a strange one because there is no way he would be first choice at Liverpool either. Johnson and Flanagan would be ahead of him at right back and if Lovren does join he will have the Croation, Agger, Sakho, and Skrtel all of whom I would prefer in the centre.
Brendan Rodgers is also excited by the return to full fitness of Daniel Agger. So you have to conclude that Richards would only make the League cup squad at best.
“Agger is one of the best players we have. He has been unlucky because he has been plagued by injuries last season,” said Rodgers when pressed about Agger’s possible departure after the recent friendly match with Brondby.
“He is a good player, he is experienced and we can use that in the upcoming season. Daniel has signed a contract with us [which expires in June 2016] and he showed in the first half, what an excellent player he is,” he added.
I’ve said it once and I will say it again: we have to concentrate on getting a quality left back, stuff these players that might do a job over the course of the season we need quality not quantity.
