Liverpool’s flying Serbian, Lazar Markovic, could make his English Premier League debut against Manchester City tomorrow night after recovering from an injury that cut short his preseason tour of America. The former Benfica player had excited reds fans with his pace and his willingness to push on and cause problems during the friendly against Olympiacos and they can’t wait to see him take that confidence in to the league.
Markovic comes with people expecting big things after he was compared to the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi by former Chelsea boss Avram Grant, but if the speedy winger is under pressure he isn’t showing it stating that he fully expects his new club to push for the title once again.
“Of Course,” he says when asked by a journalist from Britain’s Telegraph newspaper if Liverpool will win the league title.
“I watched Liverpool – I watched every one of their games last season because I love the Premier League,Their style of football is one of the main reasons why I came here. Last season, only bad luck played a part in the outcome: Liverpool were the best team.”
It is this love of the way Liverpool and their boss Brendan Rodgers go about their business that has brought the highly regarded player to Anfield. He believes in the way they play and that Rodgers can help him become one of the EPL’s all time greats.
“I am not money‑orientated,” he says. “If I was money-orientated I would have gone somewhere else,” says Lazar Markovic before explaining exactly why he eventually chose Liverpool.
“Firstly, it is one of the best clubs in the world. Secondly, it is one of the best leagues in the world and, thirdly, Liverpool are superior and the strongest team, in my opinion, in England.”
The interview has already done a lot to endear him to the Anfield faithful now we just need him to do it out on the pitch.
