Liverpool midfielder Emre Can has withdrawn from Germany’s next Confederations Cup match in Russia with an apparent knee problem.

It is the middle of June. There should be no injury news. But of course, there is. Liverpool man Emre Can is going to sit for Germany’s Confederation Cup game after withdrawing from their latest training session. Reports say he caught his studs in the turf and was suffering discomfort in his knee before hobbling off. That he was moving on his own accord is a good sign.

The German officials are not revealing anything until they have run further tests. The belief is that it is not a serious injury and he may only miss a game or two. However the one place you don’t want to get an injury is the knee. We will be watching carefully for news of how this develops!

It is a blow for the Germans as Can had performed admirably in their first two games. Another step in his progress towards becoming a dominate force in midfield. His growth over the last few years has been exciting to watch. It has not been a sudden transformation; many fans have been impatient with him. Yet his progress to being a first team calibre starter is clear.

He arrived at the club in 2014 from Bayer Leverkusen with all the raw talent and physical traits you would want in a young prospect. Despite playing out of position in his first two seasons he has won over Jurgen Klopp in the last 18 months with his tenacity and drive. Tying up his contract – which expires next summer –  now needs to be a priority for the club.
