Sander Westerveld /// 103 appearances /// 1 dope nickname

When your name is Sander Westerveld, you hardly need a nickname. “Sander Westerveld” should stand alone; it needs no propping up by a nickname.

But, he got a killer one during his playing career. “The Bomb”. That’s amazing. Westerveld was given that nickname because he could drop kick a ball from his own 18 into the stands behind the other goal.

Westerveld was the starting keeper in Liverpool’s treble winning season of 2000-2001 but was so unconvincing that Gerard Houllier decided to upgrade on the position and Westerveld played just three matches the next season before leaving.
