Could Alberto Moreno play on the wing for Liverpool?
Alberto Moreno has been causing some frustration at Liverpool for weeks now, but could playing the left-back out on the wing solve the problem?
This idea has been bounced around several times because of his attacking attitude. Many have wondered if playing Alberto Moreno higher up (where he always wonders anyway) would fix the issues left by him pressing too high.
With Moreno on the wing, a left back could fill his spot and then we’d have cover in the defence. This would allow Moreno to use his pace to burst down the pitch and either dribble, pass or shoot at the end of it.
It certainly tends to Moreno’s strong points, but I still don’t think it would work very well. For a start, his crossing isn’t exactly the best.
Then you’re left with the problem that we don’t actually have anymore good left-backs. If Moreno is on the wing and James Milner plays left back, who else do we have as a back-up?
The there’s also the issue of how good Alberto Moreno would be in the role. Would he be more effective than the likes of Philippe Coutinho, Adam Lallana, Sadio Mane or Georginio Wijnaldum?
The answer is probably not. While I’d like to see Alberto Moreno play out on the wing once, I don’t think he’d be as good as our other options.
It’s probably for the best if he stays in left-back. Clearly Jurgen Klopp has plenty of faith in Moreno, so we should support him too.
For now, it looks like James Milner will continue in the position. He’s done well, and I think he’s the best option until Moreno improves his form. After all, the team comes before any single player, so a positive result is all that matters.
