RB Leipzig are moving on a transfer for Bayer Leverkusen midifielder Kevin Kampl. Many think he is a replacement for Liverpool target Naby Keita.
According to reports in German newspaper Bild, RB Leipzig have launced a move for Bayer Leverkusen’s Kevin Kampl. The 26-year-old is thought to be available for around £25 million and would come in as an attacking midfielder. The Slovenian primarily plays centrally but can also operate on the wings if needed.
Many believe this move is to be a replacement for Naby Keita who is much nearer to a Liverpool move than people realize. It certainly would give Leipzig the ability to enter into the new Bundesliga campaign with a strong squad in the event of a Keita move. They are loath to be weakened on the eve of their first Champions League campaign.
Earlier in the week Ralf Rangnick appeared to soften on his stance towards selling the Guinean. There was a new pragmatism in his reasoning. Naby Keita has a £48 million release clause in his contract next summer. A bid of £73 million now would be hard for them to refuse. Now they have his replacement on board, it would be almost foolish not to accept.
There were reports today that Keita did not train with the RB Leipzig first team. Liverpool fans have been watching his every move this summer as he is the number one target. However, two record-breaking offers of £57 million and £66 million have already been rejected. If Liverpool were to go up again to £73 million there would likely be some movement.
Liverpool can only hope the deal for Kevin Kampl happens quickly, giving them enough time to launch a final bid for Naby Keita before the window closes on August 31st.
