A number of outlets are reporting that Liverpool are in secret talks for a surprise January transfer. Could Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos be the mystery man?
Many fans don’t believe that Liverpool will bring in anyone else this transfer window. The club have been very quiet about their business since the deal for Virgil van Dijk was announced. Many of the deals Liverpool are considering would likely be summer acquisitions; Thomas Lemar and Christian Pulisic both fall into that category.
Yet a few journalists are indicating that there is a name nobody expects that could appear as a shock January transfer target. One name appearing in the last 24 hours is Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos.
The 21-year-old Spaniard only moved to Real Madrid this summer. He was the subject of a tug of war between Barcelona and Real but opted for the La Liga champions.
Ceballos came to prominence at Real Betis with a season stacked with classy performances. He has technique and talent in spades and would only need some tactical coaching to see he become one of the best midfielders in Europe.
We all know that a direct replacement for Philippe Coutinho is impossible. It is likely that Lemar and Pulisic are being considered as options for the left-wing. Therefore, Ceballos would be a good pick to replace Coutinho’s central midfield and deeper contributions.
Much would depend on how Real Madrid see their depth at the position at present. The player believed he would be challenging for a first team place but instead has only 2 league starts all year.
If he has any dreams of making Spain’s FIFA 2018 World Cup squad this summer he needs to move as soon as possible. Liverpool could offer him that vital way out.
