No.1: Nabil Fekir

You can argue that Worthington was funnier. Also you can say the Dempsey was more incompetent. But perhaps none are as crazy and embarrassing as the Nabil Fekir transfer.

In the days after Liverpool signed Fabinho from Monaco rumors began to grow that the Reds were in pole position to sign Fekir from Lyon. That sparked a wave of 2018/19 team sheets from Liverpool fans on Twitter (including Alisson or Oblak in goal obvs.).

Over the next week more stories were coming out from France and then confirmed by British journalists that Liverpool were going to get this done. Then news came out on Thursday evening that everything was agreed. He would have his medical on Friday.

LFC Twitter was on-line all day checking for confirmation and putting out memes celebrating his imminent arrival. Small concerns over the delay of announcement were eased by a screenshot of an apparent video of Fekir in a Liverpool shirt. That video was the official first interview with the player. Reds were delighted. But still no confirmation.

Then rumors started speculating that their was an issue with the medical. His knee needed a second opinion. Still journalists were easing fears claiming this one would get done. Then late on Saturday Lyon released a statement saying he was staying and negotiations were off.

Liverpool apparently pulled out over the medical. I don’t blame them and this is not at the same level of incompetence we’ve seen in other transfers.

However it is still the most embarrassing for the fans. It is impossible to be closer to signing than doing an interview and wearing the shirt. This one will hurt for a long while to come.
