Football Manager stories: Can Matthijs de Ligt transform Liverpool into domestic titans?
Season five
Well the Football Manager Gods have decided to stop this experiment well and truly in its tracks, just as it was starting to get good.
Edwards does what Edwards does though and de Ligt was sold to PSG for an incredible £96 million – where he featured heavily in Ligue 1. Ridiculously, PSG finished second in the league on 104 points as a Pietro Pellegri lead Monaco won the division with 106 points.
The 23-year-old had a good season, starting 30 times in the league, and looks set to be an absolute world beater for a long time. It’s just a shame he won’t be playing for Liverpool – although that’ll hardly matter as I’ll be destroying this save ahahaha jokes on you Matthijs.
But at bit like with the Philippe Coutinho money, Liverpool did better without the Dutch starlet than with him and finished second in the league. Interestingly, Fabinho seems to have played a lot of the campaign at centre-back and van Dijk had a reversal of form.
However, that’s where it ends as Klopp concluded the season without any silverware. Regarding de Ligt, though, the youngster’s attributes have progressed nicely and he’s well on his way to being the world’s best defender.
With 16 for heading, 16 for marking, 15 for passing, 16 for tackling and highly impressive mental and physical attributes he’ll be a monster for the next 10 years.
