Liverpool needed two late goals to beat newly promoted Aston Villa in Birmingham on Saturday. Read our player ratings from the game here.

The game was nearly shaped by one Egyptian’s goal – just not the one we all hoped. Trézéguet put the ball into the back of the net after just 21 minutes, and that’s how the match nearly remained.

But then Andrew Robertson and Sadio Mane decided otherwise and snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in six glorious minutes.

Trent Alexander-Arnold provided the assist for Mane via a corner, who had previously laid on Robertson’s goal in the 87th minute.

How many times do we need to say this, but that really was the victory of champions. All the great teams have done it before – Manchester United during their dominance, Chelsea when Jose Mourinho reigned supreme. Now it’s the time of Jurgen Klopp.

Klopp did spring one surprise – Adam Lallana was picked ahead of Fabinho as the Brazilian is one booking away from suspension and the gaffer clearly thought he’d try and save the Octopus for the City clash.

Alisson could have done better with the goal, and he rarely saw action after the first 21 minutes. He did react really well to make sure Jordan Henderson didn’t sell him short with a back pass and made a good save from an Anwar El Ghazi shot.

There is an argument to be had that Alisson could have done better with the goal, and he rarely saw action after the first 21 minutes. He did react really well to make sure Jordan Henderson didn’t sell him short with a back pass and made a good save from an Anwar El Ghazi shot.
