Liverpool vs Everton: ‘It’s not a cup tie!’ Fans confused by team selection

Liverpool fans are confused by manager Jurgen Klopp’s team selection for the game against Everton on Wednesday night.

Klopp has made a number of surprise picks for the fixture as Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah were all left on the bench.

As one of the biggest games in 2019/2020, you could have been forgiven for going with the strongest possible side and then rotating the line up for the Bournemouth clash on Saturday.

But instead, the manager opted to hand starts to James Milner, Adam Lallana, Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri in the biggest shuffling of his pack we’ve had this season.

And as a result of that, fans have been left questioning whether Klopp knows this is a league game or a cup game, or just feeling downright confused by it all.

There were also several comments made about Naby Keita or Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain being able to feel more than a bit miffed – something that you can identify with.

The manager has opted to go for Milner, Lallana and Georginio Wijnaldum in a midfield three that prioritizes stability over creative endevour and Oxlade-Chamberlain can feel harshly done by here. He’s changed the side when he’s played and looked to be the type of player the side has been missing.

Shaqiri gets his first start of the season after he came back from a calf injury that had ruled him out since October, while Origi gets a chance to prove his worth through the middle. The Belgian loves a strike against Everton and if he can continue his good run of form int he Merseyside Derby, this selection policy will be forgotten about in a flash.

Adrian is also in the side as Alisson is suspended, while the back four is the same as we’ve come to expect over recent weeks.
