Zeljko Buvac has hit out at Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

In a shocking interview, the former Liverpool assistant Buvac has claimed that he was the mastermind behind Liverpool winning the Premier League and Champions League – despite not being at the club.

Buvac and Klopp go way back and worked together for almost 17 years. He started his coaching journey with Klopp at Mainz way back in 2001 and ended it at Anfield in 2018. He is currently the sporting director at Russian Premier League club, FC Dynamo Moscow.

To the surprise of many, there seemed to be a falling out between Buvac and Klopp, however there was not a lot of chatter around him leaving.  Pep Lijnders took his place and since then (as they say) the rest is history.

A new documentary has just been released, which includes an interview with Buvac, and it was in this interview that he made this claim. As revealed in a YouTube video, Buvac mentioned that he did not congratulate anyone at Liverpool for winning the Premier League.

Based on the quotes in the YouTube video, which has since been taken down, this is what he said.

"“I was happy for the fans, for the players. But I didn’t (congratulate anyone from Liverpool for winning the league).“I did the job of a manager for all those 17 years, except speaking in public and giving interviews. Apart from that, I had all the functions and tried to influence my team as much as I could to help them succeed. But I didn’t need that kind of attention.”“I don’t want to be a manager now. If Barcelona calls me then of course, I’ll think about it but otherwise no. You say I’m here just to stay occupied and wait for a better chance. But if you knew what kind of offers I had rejected during the pause in my career, you wouldn’t have said that.”"

Now most fans of Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp have been shocked by these claims. Knowing the personality of Klopp, he will be heartbroken to hear such comments from one of his closest friends. However, we doubt he will make any more noise or comment on this.

We have to be honest here and mention that there are not a lot of details here. Whatever happened, did so behind closed doors and hence it is close to impossible for us to know the whole truth.

Now, the fact of the matter is Buvac’s claims seem to either be an intentional dig or misquoted because it was after his departure that Liverpool ended up as League Champions and UEFA Champions League winners.

So what are these claims all about? Merely attention grabbing or something more serious that we ever knew? We know that it takes a long time to build a team, but the kind of success that Liverpool got last season was mostly due to the on-the-spot leadership of Klopp…sorry Buvac you just cannot take that away from Klopp!
