3 reasons Ben Davies must start for Liverpool vs Sheffield United
A lack of better options for Liverpool:
Like I stated earlier, Jurgen will have to choose his centre-back pairing from a pool of four relatively inexperienced defenders. Davies, Kabak, Phillips, and Williams are the options, and by a process of elimination, I believe that Davies should be the first pick.
Let’s start off with Kabak. Despite an impressive showing against Leipzig, the Turkish defender’s two Premier League starts against Leicester City and Everton have been unconvincing.
Given how early he’s been thrown into the deep end, Kabak is yet to adapt to the system seamlessly. However, what’s more worrying is his failure to anticipate danger and recover from his initial mistake.
Perhaps he needs more time in the training ground to adjust to the league. The same goes for Rhys Williams. The 20-year-old is impressive in the air but his pace, or lack thereof, puts him in extremely vulnerable situations.
This might sound too harsh on Williams and Kabak but it reflects the sad state of affairs Liverpool have been going through with their central defenders. Hopefully, with time, the duo can be used more frequently. The talent is evident in them both, and I’m sure they’ll come good at some point.
This leaves Nat Phillips. To me, he is Liverpool’s best available central defender at the moment. However, Jurgen hasn’t used him on most occasions, so perhaps there’s a lot more that he knows than I do.
Phillips came off the bench in the defeat to Everton and looked solid for most of the game. This makes me think that he will be one of the central defenders tomorrow, hopefully with Davies to his left.
