A Big Month Ahead For Liverpool

What has already been a frenetic start to the new campaign for Brendan Rodgers Liverpool is only going to ramp up in the coming months. Liverpool have started their Premier League season in relatively solid fashion recording two wins of three, including a convincing 3-0 victory in London over Spurs. Rodgers will be delighted that his club rebounded from a disappointing loss to defending champions Man City a week prior. Liverpool showed they mean business against Tottenham controlling much of the match through midfield. Scoring was spread around the pitch including a brilliant effort by new singing Alberto Moreno, who intercepted a ball at the half way line and took off with pace. He finished his solo effort with a fine strike across goal into the bottom corner. According to reports Moreno believed he had a point to prove and feels he will now be noticed and I quote.

“If they didn’t know me before, they will from now on thanks to my goal against Tottenham.”

Brendan Rodgers will be happy to see one of his nine summer signings get off the mark and it will only boost the young left backs confidence after a few mistakes against City.

All of these positives last Sunday will bode well for Liverpool as they enter one of their busiest months in years with some important matches in the BPL and of course Europe. It all kicks off after the international break when the Reds host Aston Villa at Anfield. Villa have shown great strides since last years dismal season and won’t be a push over when they walk out to face Liverpool. Brendan and his squad will be all too familiar with Villas 2-2 draw last year at Anfield and will have to sure up the backline to grab all three points.

The international break could also work in Liverpool’s favor as it gives an extra week of recouping time for new singing and England international Adam Lallana to join the frame. Lallana has been sidelined since the beginning of the season and will be striving to gain fitness and make his debut in front of the adoring Kop. To have someone of his quality back will only help Liverpool’s attacking options and give them an added threat for goals this season.

The busy schedule doesn’t stop there as three days after the affair with Villa, Liverpool make their triumphant return to the Uefa Champions League with a group stage match against Champions League newcomers Ludogorets Razgrad at Anfield. Fans will be over the moon to have the Reds back in Europe and I believe as much as Liverpool and their beloved fans want that Premier League title that has slipped from their finger tips so much, they would definitely welcome a run in Europe and potentially capturing a second Champions League trophy, They have been drawn in a relatively “easy” group on paper but will be involved in what could be an incredible home and away tie against European giants Real Madrid. Liverpool should still feel confident going into those matches as they haven’t lost to Madrid in Europe to date and fans will remember that fantastic win at Anfield.

With more at stake this season it will take some real guts and determination to bring silverware especially that elusive Premier League title back to Merseyside. However with two wins out of three and a successful summer transfer window for Rodgers, bringing in nine new players to fill in some of the gaps where it was needed, the Reds are definitely moving in the right direction. Many critiques gave Liverpool no chance of repeating their amazing season last year finishing just short of winning the title after they sold their leading scorer and talisman Luis Suarez. Where are the goals going to come from? Well you can’t forget that Daniel Sturridge finished runner-up in Premier League scoring behind his teammate Suarez and the striker scored a bunch of those markers with Suarez out with suspension. You also have the emerging talent of Raheem Sterling who only continues to impress not only his own fans, but football fans around the globe. Lazar Markovic was brought in and already we are seeing signs that he will shine in this league. Finally Mario Balotelli has signed to add some power up front, and if he sticks to focusing on his football rather than his off the pitch antics, he could be the gem signing of the season. All in all if Rodgers can continue to get the best out of his young players as well as get his back line with new singing Lovren at the forefront playing tighter defensively, than success will follow.

Can the Reds continue to build on an all round amazing campaign last season and bring some silverware and glory back to Merseyside? Only time will tell, but one thing is for certain. Since Rodgers took over the club two years ago he has built an identity at the club, a strong identity framed around winning. The style of free-flowing attack and positive play has built the Reds into a formidable club around Europe again. This identity and style of play will only help the Reds climb back to the top and their determination to pull out all the stops to win and book a place in Liverpool folklore is definitely worth watching.
