Liverpool’s 5 Champions League victories: Looking back at glory
By Kris Whelan
Looking back at the five European trophies Liverpool earned throughout their history, making them the most successful club in England.
It’s been over ten years since Liverpool last claimed a European title, ten years that has felt like a lifetime when you consider how the club has struggled to earn qualification in to the Champions League of late. Liverpool currently sit in 10th spot in the Premier League, seven points off the coveted 4th place.
New manager Jurgen Klopp has been given the task to restore past glories at the club and though the early signs have been positive, he has an uphill challenge if he is to qualify for next season’s elite European competition. It will take the German coach some time to settle in to the club, but there’s no doubt that a lot is expected of the flamboyant boss.
It seems like a distant memory when Liverpool qualified for the Champions League year after year, as though it were impossible for them to fail. Even the year they finished outside the top four in the Premier League, they went on to win the competition which effectively re-wrote the rules and earned qualification for the following season.
Yes, it seems like a solid age since our last title. However, it was a bigger drought for the club before the triumphant 2005 final in Istanbul. Before Rafa Benitez’s men pulled off the miraculous comeback against an incredible AC Milan team, it had been a 21 year dry spell.
Here’s hoping Jurgen Klopp is indeed the right man for the job and can bring Liverpool back to the forefront of European football. In the meantime however, let’s take a look back at the five European finals that made us one of the biggest clubs in world football.
