The Brazilian left-back will always be remembered for scoring the third goal in the 4-1 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford from a free kick in the 2009 season and of course catching out Petr Cech in a UEFA Champions League semi-final which ended 4-4 at Stamford Bridge. But Aurelio could have been much more than that.

Signed from Valencia by Rafael Benitez, Aurelio, when in form, was one of the best left-backs in the league. The former Valencia and Gremio player had a history of being brilliant from dead ball situations but he just couldn’t get over his injury problems.

Achilles tendon injuries, hamstring tweaks and torn muscles were a norm for the talented defender and his time at Liverpool was cut short under Benitez. Aurelio did later sign a pay-as-you-play offer under Roy Hodgson but he couldn’t recapture his form under the English manager and ultimately left Liverpool in 2012 under Kenny Dalglish, making only 87 league appearances for the Reds in over six years at the club.

But we still remember him for that brilliant free kick against Manchester United, even if he didn’t play as many games as he could have, this is one sweet memory of his time at Anfield.
