Liverpool player ratings: 0-1 Manchester United
By Tom Bogert
James Milner (OFF 90′), 6:
Milner caught some stick on the ol’ Twittersphere for his performance against United which was confusing. He played a standard James Milner game: hard work, intangibles, clean passes but was never going to score from 22-yards nor play a 40-yard swerving through ball. He did his job.
When he picks up the ball on the wing with space and time to run at his defender, he’ll usually pass, or dribble away from the player. There’s nothing wrong with that, it’s not his game. He’s a passer with smart movement. He’ll dribble, but he’s not a guy who’s going to pick out a fullback and just run at him one on one as many chances as he can a match.
It was a dependable match from Milner. He’s just not a match winner, which is okay because the team can’t employ 11 match winners, they need reliable performers like Milner.
