LB Brad Smith: STAY

Smith has had an unlikely turn of fortunes since the beginning of the season.

Firstly, he was out of a contract with Liverpool and didn’t renew in the summer. Then in November, he returned and the club inked him to a new deal. That whole situation is odd.

Then, he is thrown into the first team when the fixtures continue to pile up while Klopp watches player after player hit the treatment table. His superior, Moreno, was never one of them, but obviously the Spaniard wasn’t going to be able to play 90 minutes every third day for two months straight. So Smith got his chance.

Smith took his chance and thoroughly impressed to the point where there have been legitimate discussions to stick him ahead of Moreno at times. At worst, he’s been a reliable backup, which is much more than he seemed to be.

The caveat to keeping him would be if another fullback comes in during the summer. I’m not of the opinion that the club needs another fullback, but, some are. If one arrives that’d leave Clyne, Flanagan, Moreno, Smith and the new guy. Smith will be 22-years-old by the time next season rolls around, so it would feel useless to leave him languishing 5th in the depth chart. The answer of whether he stays or goes is dependent on that.
