With Liverpool’s expansive history and impressive roster of former players, we take a look at the most expensive players to leave Anfield

When you think of Liverpool, particularly the squads of old, you think about the key players and legends who previously donned the all-red kit. Whether its John Barnes, Kenny Dalglish or Ian Rush, there’s always been an iconic player (or several) in the Liverpool line-up.

As the club undergoes probably it’s scariest transition period to date, a battle to avoid mediocrity ensues. The current Liverpool team lacks legends, lacks scousers, and most importantly of all appears to lack any world-class players. Okay, on his day Philippe Coutinho can bang in a stunner, but he lacks the consistency and influence to push the current team to challenge for league titles. Injuries to the likes of Daniel Sturridge, and the sale of Luis Suarez, have reduced the amount of goals produced and sentenced us to a mid-table position.

How did Liverpool find themselves stuck In this situation? Some argue that a transfer policy which sees our strongest players sold for profit hinders the strength of the side, whereas others argue that we haven’t had a world class manage since Rafa Benitez. What I do know is that nothing can change the facts of our struggling situation. Under the former Swansea manager, Brendan Rodgers, Liverpool threw away their best title chance in years, condemning them to a second place finish.

This is arguably the weakest Liverpool squad in years, lacking goal scorers, leaders and world class talents. Rush the Kop has decided to take you on an emotional journey, filled with broken hearts and unhealed wounds, as we look at the players who left Liverpool for the biggest transfer fees.

Grab your box of tissues, put on your favourite kit of old, and get ready to be reminded of the great players we have sold.
