Liverpool’s 15 most expensive sold players
By Ethan Lowe
Andy Carroll
Date Sold: 19th June 2013 Appearances: 58 Goals: 11
Liverpool’s most expensive signing, Andy Carroll, only takes 7th place on this list – which is rather embarrassing to be honest. Easily one of the biggest flops in Liverpool’s history, the ridiculous fee paid for the English striker still to this day makes no sense. Andy Carroll had been playing for Newcastle, but was injured when Liverpool approached the player in the January transfer window of the 2010/11 season. On the 31st of January 2011, Liverpool paid an unexplainable £35million for the striker – the same day that Luis Suarez signed for only £22.8million!
That’s right, Liverpool paid more for Andy Carroll than they did for Luis Suarez. Andy Carroll spent a month recovering from the injury he had when signed, and then took six games to find his first two goals. In 47 appearances Carroll managed only 9 goals, which came nowhere near representing value for money.
With the arrival of Brendan Rodgers, it was made clear that Carroll was set to leave. Big Andy was loaned to West Ham for the entire 2012/13 season despite Liverpool being short of a striker, and ultimately a permanent deal was struck between the clubs.
