Raheem Sterling
Date Sold: 14th July 2015 Appearances: 129 Goals: 23
Little Raheem Sterling joined Liverpool at the age of 15, after joining the Queens Park Rangers youth set up when he was younger. He first made waves in the footballing world after scoring 5 goals in a 9-0 FA Cup win over Southend for Liverpool’s youth team. At such a young age Sterling developed a large amount of hype, and finally made his first senior Liverpool appearance on the 24th of March, 2012. Two more substitute appearances occurred near to the end of that season, and the promising youngster looked to be pushing his way into the senior side.
With Brendan Rodgers taking charge at Liverpool, Sterling quickly impressed enough to earn his way into the England set-up as the fifth youngest player to be called up for the national team. During the 2012/13 season, Sterling played 36 of the clubs 54 competitive matches, turning 18 midway through that season. Inconsistent form and only two goals left the youngster with much to prove, however promising he may have looked.
Luckily, Sterling really developed during the 2013/14 season, with Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez alongside him. He played 90% of Liverpool’s competitive matches, and scored 10 goals, with his dribbling ability advancing dramatically. He remained at Liverpool, managing to impress during an all-round poor 2014/15 season, but faced heavy criticism after practically forcing a move from the club in the summer of 2015. His agent even said “I don’t care about the PR of the club and the club situation. I don’t care. He is definitely not signing. He’s not signing for £700,000, £800,000 or £900,000 a week.”, which led to a wealth of abuse being thrown Sterling’s way, and the player being dubbed a snake for his behaviour and his decision to move to Manchester City.
