Fernando Torres

Date Sold: 31st January 2011 Appearances: 142 Goals: 81

Fernando Torres can easily be described as one of the most gifted goal-scorers of all time, but equally as one of the fastest declining players in modern football. After progressing through the ranks at his boyhood club, Atletico Madrid, Torres moved to Liverpool for £20.2million in the summer of 2007. He announced his arrival with a stunning début goal against Chelsea, and scored 24 league goals in his first season for the reds. On one hand, Torres scored an impressive 12 goals in a run of 8 consecutive games, however only three of his 24 goals that season came away from home.

Torres finished his first season without a winners medal at his new club, and had a tough 2008/09 season at Anfield. Injuries caused the striker to miss games, but he was eager to make up for it during the second half of Liverpool’s title-challenging campaign, when he scored 11 goals in 22 appearances.

The 2009/10 season saw Torres’s best goals to game ratio yet, but he sadly missed as many games as he played. With the reds settling for 23 points less than the previous year, suspicions began to rise about whether or not Liverpool could match the Spaniards high ambitions. It was no surprise when Torres requested a transfer in 2011, having looked unhappy for several months. Ultimately, he moved to league rivals Chelsea having never kissed the Liverpool crest.

Most fans dislike Torres after his actions, and it provided hilarious comedy seeing the player fail to emulate his Liverpool success throughout his three and a half year spell with Chelsea.
