Momo Sissoko

Date Sold: 28th January 2008 Appearances: 87 Goals: 1

Momo Sissoko was a defensive midfielder for Liverpool, and he arrived at the club for £5.6 million from Valencia on the 14th of July 2005. When he was just starting out Rafa Benitez offered Momo first team chances at Valencia and was clearly very fond of him as a talented prospect. With Momo going on to impress even after Benitez left the club for Liverpool, he attracted the attention of Everton, who looked certain to sign the impressive youngster. Benitez became aware of Momo’s availability, and was keen to work with him again, so ‘stole’ him at the last moment and signed him up for Liverpool.

His energetic performances in midfield earned him an incredible amount of hype, but an eye injury suffered in his first season looked likely to end his career and severely reduced his playing time. Luckily, Momo recovered and returned with the help of goggles, and started in the FA Cup final against West Ham – just as he had started 36 other matches in his first season.

Going into the second season, Momo earned himself a man of the match award in the community shield game against Chelsea, but failed to maintain his positive performances from the season before. He sorely lacked technical ability, and was pushed out of the first team with the arrival of Javier Mascherano. His last game for Liverpool was a League Cup tie against Chelsea around Christmas, 2007. He was then sold for £8.2million to Juventus, earning Liverpool a nice amount of profit.
