Peter Crouch

Date Sold: 11th July 2008 Appearances: 134 Goals: 42

Rafa Benitez took on the entire Liverpool hierarchy in order to sign Peter Crouch from Southampton in July 2005, and managed to get his man by forking out £7million.

At first, Crouch looked like he was set to embarrass Benitez, struggling to find his first goal. He caused much controversy until he finally broke his deadlock with a lucky goal against Wigan Athletic on the 3rd of December, 2005. After 1,229 minutes without a goal he added another against Wigan before going on to score another 5 goals across the rest of the month.

“Had I not become a footballer, I think I would have been a virgin.” – Crouch on Sky Sports’ Soccer AM.

What I love most about Peter Crouch is how technically able he is for someone who stands at 6 foot 7 inches. He scored several acrobatic goals and controlled the ball exceptionally well for someone with such long legs. Dubbed “Crouchinho” for his technical skills, he scored some big goals for Liverpool – such as a hat-trick against Arsenal and knocking Manchester United out of the FA Cup.

Ultimately, his height made him a very ‘specialist’ striker, and the arrival of Fernando Torres pushed Crouch out of the first team. He was eventually sold on to Portsmouth for £8.75million, a fee which raised to £11million with the inclusion of additional costs.
