Raul Meireles
Date Sold: 31st August 2011 Appearances: 44 Goals: 5
Before moving to England, Raul Meireles established himself as a quality central midfielder during six seasons at Porto, where he was part of an outfit that won the Portuguese title four times. He gained recognition on an international level while at Porto, and had appeared for Portugal 38 times (scoring 6) ahead of his Anfield move.
His only season was a big success, as Meireles appeared in all but five league games, while featuring in 8 cup fixtures. Struggling at first while being played on the wing, he found his form after being moved into his preferred position as a centre-mid. Not typically known for his goals, Meireles even managed to find 5 goals in 6 games, which was an impressive contribution from the midfielder. One of those goals also happened to be against fierce rivals Everton, which always makes a goal so much more important.
Meireles worked tirelessly in midfield, creating 5 assists from 66 chances and showing the league his worth as a player. Chelsea saw his quality, and he moved to Stamford Bridge for a transfer fee of £12million.
