Robbie Fowler

Date Sold: 29th November 2001 Appearances: 369 Goals: 183

Often referred to as the most natural goal-scorer to ever lead Liverpool’s front line, Robbie Fowler is one of the most loved and adored legends that ever donned the all-red kit. After being scouted as a youngster and making his way through the ranks, Fowler made a lasting impression shortly after his promotion to the first team by demolishing Fulham – scoring 5 goals against them. He scored 13 goals in his first 15 games for the senior team, and it was evident from then on that Fowler was something of a goal-scoring phenomenon. Despite being side-lined by a broken ankle, Fowler still managed to finish his first season just 1 goal behind Ian Rush – who had played 15 more games.

Fowler’s deadly partnership with Stan Collymore (number 15 on this list) made him one of the most in-form strikers in Europe, and Fowler maintained his gift at finding goals throughout his lengthy Liverpool career. He had his controversial moments which saw him serve several bans, the most memorable of which probably being the ban he served for “snorting” one of the pitch lines during a celebration – which he did as a response to taunts that he was on drugs. Fowler also suffered from a number of injuries, which saw him miss chunks of games at a time and limiting his ultimate success.

Fowler achieved so much with Liverpool football club, and a much more in-depth look at Fowlers career can be found here on lfchistory.net.

Fowler was sold to Leeds after only managing to score 4 goals in 10 starts and 7 substitute appearances for a fee of £12million, but did eventually make a heroic return to Liverpool over four years later. Rafa Benitez said this after bring Fowler back to Liverpool;

“We have signed a player with so much passion for this football club and I think he will act as an example to every player here in how much he loves Liverpool. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a player quite so happy to be joining a club before. He hasn’t been signed because he loves the club; he’s been signed because he’s one of the best goalscorers ever to play in the Premiership and he can score goals for us right now. We have signed a player with a passion and a heart for this club that no amount of money can buy. We are close to a very high level right now but with Robbie we can go even higher.”
