Despite drawing 1-1 against Manchester City in the League cup final, Liverpool lost the match 3-1 during the penalty shoot-out

Today I saw what it means to be Liverpool football club. Although we didn’t win, and admittedly could have created more chances and finished up with more goals, Liverpool showed true fighting spirit. We went behind after Simon Mignolet let in a shocking goal that any other keeper in the world could have saved, but then we carried on fighting.

The little magician, Philippe Coutinho, got us an equaliser in the 83rd minute, and the reds went on to dominate extra-time. That was that, and the match went onto penalties. Thinks looked good for a second, as Emre Can scored his first following a Man-City miss, however two saves from Willy Caballero shattered Liverpool’s chances of winning the match.

It was hard to take, and even Daniel Sturridge was left in tears. The passion, the fight, the ferocity shown by the players meant we never deserved to lose that match in such a cruel way. In all honesty, Liverpool had been lucky during throughout the game, with Raheem Sterling failing to score 2 easy finishes and Sergio Aguero struggling to find the net – mainly down to Simon Mignolet’s heroics.

The players gave their all and that’s what they should be praised for, but in this player ratings we need to look at more than just the emotional side of the match. While the likes of Lucas Leiva stepped up to play the best they could, other players just failed to contribute as much. It’s a cup final, and everybody wanted to win, so of course it hurts to come out as losers. We need to stay positive, and look forward to many more final experiences under Jurgen Klopp, who made outstanding changes and deployed the team perfectly.

Here’s Rush the Kop’s player ratings, feel free to tell us how wrong we are.
