What a night for Liverpool, who beat fierce rivals Manchester United in the first European clash between the two

In recent history, Liverpool have found Manchester United to be a force they just can’t beat. Liverpool had lost 4 consecutive matches against the red devils, with Jurgen Klopp’s only match against United being the closest. Despite dominating, Klopp’s first chance to best Louis Van Gaal ended rather unluckily, after Wayne Rooney stole the points for United.

When two of the most historic and successful British clubs were drawn to face each-other in the Europa league, many Liverpool fans saw this as our chance to get one over on our rivals. The first leg took place at Anfield last night, and the Kop was full even 30 minutes before kick off – set to provide one of the most memorable atmospheres in Klopp’s time at the club. The chants were loud, the banners were plenty, and the support was something to be proud of (especially in contrast to the United supports chanting about Hillsborough).

Any nerves were calmed as soon as I saw the team-sheets. Liverpool’s full strength line-up would have been embarrassed to lose against a United side that was littered with youth players due to their injuries. The first goal was a coolly taken penalty from Daniel Sturridge, and the second was a perfectly weighted pass into the six yard box from Adam Lallana that was lashed in by Roberto Firmino.

In this game, Liverpool showed the side we all wanted to see. They played with passion, drive and motivation, giving their all to beat their rivals. The fans were overjoyed, the players all contributed, and the football they played looked of another level to that we’ve seen so far this season. Nothing makes you prouder to support Liverpool than nights like this one.

Here’s Rush the Kop’s player ratings, and as usual, feel free to share your ratings in the comments below.
