Liverpool dominate the Merseyside derby and ride home a comfortable win against rivals Everton

Anybody who watched this game knows just how much of a mauling it turned out to be. Liverpool had won their last three matches, and had exceptional form going into this game, while Everton looked the underdogs from the start.

With Roberto Martinez sitting on a very fine line, he couldn’t exactly afford to slip up here – yet that’s exactly what he did.

Liverpool had the better chances in the first half, leading to a beautiful headed goal from Divock Origi. Then Mamadou Sakho doubled the score right before the break, earning James Milner two cracking assists.

Unfortunately, a disgusting tackle from Funes Mori left Divock Origi down, before our Belgian beast was removed via stretcher. It’s unfortunate that Origi has picked up some form of injury just as his form takes off, but hopefully he’s back sooner rather than later.

Daniel Sturridge replaced Origi, and found the net for a Liverpool third in the 61st minute. He looked sharp and up for it, and Liverpool went on to bully an already beaten Everton side.

The commentators during the game describe it as the most one sided Merseyside derby in recent history, and it was frankly pathetic. Liverpool started the game looking better, but as soon as Everton conceded two and lost a man, they gave up.

Martinez removed Ross Barkley, who seemed the most passionate player in an Everton shirt. The guy looked to be one of few opportunities that Everton had to find a goal from somewhere, and his manager completely let him down and for what? To rest him for a semi-final despite Everton lacking central-defenders?

Philippe Coutinho added insult to injury, firing a shot past the battered remains of what once was a promising Everton side, and Liverpool went on to win the Merseyside derby in probably the easiest way they ever have – and by four goals.

Here’s Rush the Kop’s player ratings for the Merseyside derby.
