Against Villarreal Firmino was used as a false nine and found it difficult. His most successful performances as a false nine come in open matches that Liverpool are allowed to high press, and space is allotted.

In the first leg, Villarreal sat deep and didn’t try to play much other than when they had Liverpool pinned. They’d retreat back towards their net, throw four defenders across the 18 with a couple midfielders just ahead of them, and begged Liverpool to break them down or cross. They’d attempt some crosses, but Firmino was doing what he’s best at, buzzing around the top of the box.

Brought back to a number 10 role, he’ll be more successful and better able to break down a defense with a striker ahead of him to alleviate the pressure and busy up defenders.
