Liverpool record a 2-0 win against Watford in the Premier League

Following an impressive Europa League win against Villarreal, which see’s Liverpool progress into the final of that competition, the reds welcomed Watford to Anfield.

It hurts to say it, but Liverpool lost by three goals against Watford in the away fixture this season, so the reds were looking to regain some dignity and triumph against a decent Watford team.

The game was far from classy, and both sides started sloppy and lacked any real quality. The younger Liverpool side seemed to struggle with Watford’s counters, but after Joe Allen bagged their first goal things settled considerably.

In the second half, Watford’s three substitutions allowed them to pressure the reds, but Roberto Firmino’s arrival change the game substantially. The clever Brazilian added more threat to their attack, and scored the second goal after walking into dangerous areas with ease.

I expected this Liverpool team to struggle considerably, with Martin Skrtel and Lucas Leiva making a weaker defensive partnership. The two actually performed reasonably well, giving an effective showing as Liverpool kept out Watford’s best efforts.

The midfield of Joe Allen and Kevin Stewart also proved effective, and they helped defend while giving the attacking players plenty of possession.

The result ended up going Liverpool’s way, thanks to some big saves from Simon Mignolet and the odd moments of beauty from our attacking players. It wasn’t the biggest and most beautiful victory, but at least we didn’t bottle yet another 2-0 lead.

Hopefully we can go on to end the season on a high, and Jurgen Klopp can get the chance to test some of his reserve players before the season ends. Everything currently relies on our Europa League battle, and that will clearly be our main target.

Here’s Rush the Kop’s player ratings following Liverpool’s 2-0 win against Watford in the Premier League.
