Liverpool steal an undeserved point against Chelsea in the Premier League

Well, that ended better than I expected watching the game.

Liverpool started incredibly well, stringing together quick and exciting passes while moving the ball forward. We had several good chances early, but failed to get the goal we needed. Then, we seemingly disappeared.

Chelsea had several players out, and we should have really capitalised on this, but we gave them too much time and space. They worked the ball well, and Eden Hazards incredible goal gave them the lead.

I’m not sure what effected the Liverpool squad, because almost everybody gave a half-hearted performance. Miss-placed passes, sloppy possession and some greedy play lead to us struggling to find a goal. It was a reflection on Jurgen Klopp’s early games, when chances mounted but we couldn’t score.

On came the substitutes, who showed more fight than any existing players on the pitch. Joe Allen added some intensity and pressing to our midfield, and Christian Benteke looked really up for it today. Then Sheyi Ojo’s arrival marked the best few moments for Liverpool, as the younger bagged his 4th assist in 5 games.

While a relatively unimportant game in comparison to next weeks Europa League final, I don’t think the mentality that its okay to lose is one I want to accept. The best clubs in the world don’t say, “oh it’s okay we lost because we don’t care enough to try”, they fight as much as they possibly can. With a full week to recover, and the fact Klopp will likely rotate this weekend, this team had no excuse for not giving their usual 100%.

I’m happy with a point though, given our poor performance in the end. Here’s Rush the Kop’s player ratings for our draw against Chelsea.
