18. Joe Gomez
Man, what could have been if an ACL injury didn’t prematurely rob him of his season in October. It’s just not fair.
When Gomez signed, it was with minimal fanfare, expectation or general knowledge. After all, he started in less than half of the matches for Charlton in the Championship, it was assumed he’d be loaned out.
He probably was meant to be loaned out, anyway. But a week into preseason, Rodgers was asked a question about the plans for Gomez. The manager simply responded that the boy was staying with Liverpool, in the first team. Gomez had impressed so quickly.
So quickly, in fact, that a right footed 18 year old center back who’d yet to play a minute in the Premier League was the starting left fullback on opening day for Liverpool Football Club. He played terrific as Liverpool won 1-0 at Stoke City, a ground they had lost 6-1 on the final day of 2014-15.
Gomez was only able to five starts in the league and two in the Europe League before his knee gave way. He wasn’t available for selection once under Klopp.
