Liverpool’s top former captains
By Ethan Lowe
A look at the top former Liverpool captains, and the roles they played at our historic club
In the grand scheme of our football club, I’m a relatively young supporter. I spent my childhood supporting football in general, enjoying both playing and watching the sport. My parents weren’t exactly fans of any particular team, and being raised in Wigan saw me pushed more towards the closer Manchester teams.
Don’t worry, I’ve never for a second supported a team from Manchester – despite the large following those teams have in my local area. When I was just a significantly smaller 7 year old, Liverpool performed one of the greatest feats in sporting history. They came from three goals down in order to claim the Champions League trophy, and produced a moment that every Liverpool fan will never forget.
It was the exciting, quick and offensive play that drew me to Liverpool. Being largely uninfluenced (ignoring the uninteresting Manchester teams) allowed me to truly fall in love with this football club, and now, there’s no going back.
I didn’t really care about the other teams in the league, and how many trophies they won/were winning. Liverpool stood out as more than a team, they stood out as a club that respected its values and were proud of its history. To me, that’s something I want to be a part of, and will support until the day that I die.
Why does all this matter to an article supposedly about Liverpool captains? Well, because it was Steven Gerrard’s passion, desire and determination to succeed that helped draw me towards the club in my younger years.
He was, is, and will always be the greatest captain I have ever seen. Everybody who wants to make the same old jokes about him slipping can do so as they please, because nothing could taint the admiration I have for that man.
I’m going to take a look at the Liverpool captains of the past, because I feel the captain should always be the heartbeat of the team. We’re going to count up towards the player with the most games played as captain, starting from number 9 in what happens to be an extensive list. I promise this won’t all be as soppy as this first slide, so feel free to click on.
A big thanks to LFChistory, where I found all the following statistics and quotes for this article. I can’t recommend their site enough.
