Emlyn Hughes

Appearances – 665

We’ve mentioned Emlyn Hughes several times in this article already, and it’s finally time to talk about the man himself. Making his debut on the 4th of March, 1967, and finishing his Liverpool career on the 4th of April, 1979, Hughes has a long Liverpool career – once again before my time.

A name as big as Hughes however, I’ve heard of him before. An incredibly decorated Liverpool player and captain, Hughes is often regarded as one of the most enthusiastic players to don the jersey.

It didn’t take long for this strong, energetic and passionate man to become a regular in Shankley’s side, and he quickly won over the fans. He even managed to be quite a hit with the ladies, once being voted as the most attractive footballer.

He helped bring a number of trophies to a very successful Liverpool side, but was quite a controversial character who often had his differences in the changing room. The likes of the previously mentioned Tommy Smith absolutely hated Hughes, and even Bob Paisley had this to say about him – “Emlyn always struck me as a player who could have been an even better one if he had been a slightly different personality. He always liked to be King of the Roost,”

No matter the differences however, Paisley clearly recognised his talent as a player. Hughes went on to remain a key part of Liverpool’s team and win even more silverware for the side.

After twelve and a half years, filled with success and appreciation, Hughes departed Liverpool. However controversial, the man seems like he’d have been a joy to watch.
