3. Fernando Morientes /// 61 appearances /// 12 goals /// 1 Failed Risk

Steven Gerrard called him a “world class player” on his arrival, adding “you know you’re not taking a risk” signing him.

Whoops.

Morientes averaged a goal every sixth game in total for Liverpool, a far cry from his averages in the Spanish league as well as the Spanish national team. Sometimes things don’t work out, unfortunately, and it just wasn’t meant to be for the striker.

Thankfully for the sake of staying away from utter infamy, he was purchased for just £6million as this was on the eve of bonkers modern football fees. Had it been a decade later, a striker of his pedigree would’ve been purchased for £40million and we’d be calling him the biggest flop ever.

Somewhere in the world, Andy Carroll gently weeps.
