2. Stewart Downing /// 91 appearances /// 7 goals /// 1,255 wayward crosses

Can I be honest? Somewhere in the deep depths of my closet, I own a Stewart Downing jersey. I can admit it, I was young and stupid. I jumped into the hype and discovered an illegal jersey site, so $20 was too irresistible and I already owned countless Gerrard and Suarez kits.

Downing was brought to the club from Aston Villa for £18.5million in summer of 2011 and mercifully left for West Ham two years later. Since, he’s returned to his boyhood club of Middlesbrough.

The essence of his purchase was compounding a bad mistake. He was meant to supplement Carroll and unlock the striker’s true ability with the quality he’d provide from crosses, which escaped him as soon as he put on a Liverpool shirt.

We should have known from the beginning, to be honest. He smashed the crossbar on his debut which was a neat microcosm for his Liverpool career.
