Eight players that Liverpool need to start against Tottenham
By Tom Bogert
Simon Mignolet
Who would imagine there’s a scenario in which there’d be active advocating for Mignolet to start?
Let’s make this clear: I’m only talking about against Tottenham in the League Cup, not against Palace on the weekend. It’s the Loris Karius era and he needs patience and a long leash. Remember when David De Gea was criticized heavily throughout his first season at United?
Mignolet must start the non-league games, though. For all of his shortcomings he’s still a professional level keeper. He’s not Alex Manninger, he should be eroding on the bench for the entire season. Just for the league games.
This gives him a chance to retain some confidence, show a little form. In a business sense it’ll help to retain whatever value he has should he decide he wants to move on this summer in search for greener pastures, one where he’ll be able to stand in that grass rather than enviously watching from the bench.
