Liverpool’s well-loved manager, Jurgen Klopp, suggests that his time with the Reds could be his last as a manager, hopefully with some glorious success at Anfield!
Klopp is now managing his third club. He began his managing career with Mainz 05, a club that he played for professionally. During his time with Mainz he led his side to their first appearance in the Bundesliga, qualifying for the UEFA Cup in 2005-2006; this was the height of his achievements with the club.
Then, after an abysmal 2006-2007 season, Mainz was relegated. This was followed by another underachieving season in 2007-2008, after which Klopp resigned. He finished with a 109-78-83 record. During his time with Mainz, Klopp showed promise and passion, the same promise and passion Liverpool know and loves today.
Jurgen Klopp with Borussia Dortmund
Next, Borussia Dortmund took a risk on the promising young manager, signing a two-year contract with the club. In his first year, Klopp led his side to victory in the DFB-Supercup. This was only the beginning, the Supercup win was followed by two back to back Bundesliga titles, 2010-2011 and 2011-2012.
During his time at Dortmund, Klopp experienced domestic success, Champions League success. He brought home a good amount of silver-ware for BVB. This gave Klopp the “skins on the wall,” to be courted by Premier League clubs. His final record with Dortmund was, 179-69-70.
Jurgen Klopp with Liverpool
Now, in his third appointment Klopp signed with Liverpool in October 2015. He quickly became a star. Why? Because of emotion, his Gegenpressing techniques, and his passion for his team and the game of football.
In his second season with the Reds, it seems that Klopp is at Anfield for the long-term. Klopp told to ESPN FC, “I would say it is very unlikely I will become a club-hopper all of a sudden.”
Klopp enjoys long-term projects, desiring to build a team that functions well in his system, and believes in what he wants to accomplish. This gives Klopp the opportunity to have a lot of success.
Klopp went on to say, “I will not have been in charge of 10 different clubs once my managerial career is over… On the contrary, it is always quite easy for me to fully commit to what I am doing because they are often long-term projects.”
Liverpool currently sit third in the table and are primed for a Champions League spot next season. Klopp is constructing a masterpiece at Anfield. He has a special relationship with his players and wants to see his masterpiece shine; for Klopp that means staying at Liverpool until 2022, when his contract expires.
Klopp continued, “If I fulfill my contract with Liverpool, then there is a good chance I will have won something here. I could be in an uncomfortable situation if we do not win anything. People expect Liverpool to win trophies.”
That is the expectation, and success is measured in wins and trophies, let’s hope that Liverpool fans see some silverware soon, because this Liverpool fan wants to see Klopp live out his contract at Anfield!
