Liverpool draw against Southampton, again
By Paul Drake
Does Liverpool want to play Champions League football next season? No one can tell, because over the past month the Reds have been inconsistent at best.
On Sunday, the Reds hobbled through another draw at home, this time against Southampton. This marks the third straight match at home without a win for Jürgen Klopp. That is not something to be proud of for the Reds manager. It was certainly a drab and boring match to watch… I’m pretty sure fans fell asleep watching it in the stands…. at least I would have.
The most action erupted from the touch-line. Klopp’s angry-side appeared multiple times during the 0-0 draw against the Saints. Klopp let his emotions rip at the horrible officiating, especially after Liverpool was denied a clear corner kick! The Reds boss was fired up, if only his players had that much passion, maybe they would have won the match.
A Few Notes
The match against the Saints was not a complete failure, there were a few bright performances. Daniel Sturridge is worth noting, he came on for Divock Origi and made some semi-impressive touches, but it wasn’t enough.
Adam Lallana came on for Lucas Leiva on Sunday. Lallana took one shot and it was on target! Also, the Reds midfielder sent in one key pass, creating another chance. This is the second match in a row for Lallana to enter as a substitute. He has not contributed much in those appearances, but every time he does come on, the pace of the match changes. Hopefully Lallana will be able to start against West Ham on May 14.
Dejan Lovren made seven clearances and intercepted four passes during the match on Sunday. Recently, Lovren continues to rack-up the clearances. He averages eight defensive actions per match, including clearances and interceptions. Though the Reds struggled on Sunday, Lovren did not, he showed his defensive prowess. He is redeeming himself from some ugly moves earlier this season.
Joel Matip, like Lovren made significant clearances, eight of them, and three interceptions. Matip and Lovren seem to make a good combination in the back-line. On Sunday, Matip won 75% of his tackles which was 35% higher than the entire side. He made three key tackles, helping the Reds maintain a clean sheet. If Matip can learn to be more consistent, then Klopp has really found a fantastic defender.
