5 World Class players: Cristiano Ronaldo

"“Liverpool are one of the best clubs in England and it would be a dream for any player to represent a club of such traditions."

“I will have to hope they make an offer that is good for both Sporting and myself.

"“The English league is not one of my favorites, but it is very interesting. I think my way of playing can be reconciled in the Premiership. If a player has quality then he can play anywhere."

“Let’s see how things turn out. I am going to continue working as hard as ever.”

That was a 19-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo talking as speculation about his move from Portugal heated up. It’s easy to write this comment off with more that a  little cynicism. That it was said by a kid looking to build his own hype and worth. But our boss at the time, Gerard Houllier, has since admitted that he could have signed the man the future greatest player in the world.

“I saw him in the Toulon Under-21 tournament and we went for him, but we had a wage scale and we weren’t paying the sort of salary he wanted,” Houllier told Britain’s Mail on Sunday.

Who did we sign instead? The new Zinedine Zidane, also known as Bruno Cheyrou, El Hadj Diouf and Anthony Le Tallec. Three signings that basically brought an end to the Houllier era and it’s not hard to see why.
