5 World Class players: Mario Gotze

We all know that The Great One, Sir Jürgen Klopp, has tried to bring Mario Gotze to Anfield on numerous occasions. But what many people don’t know is that we could have signed him much, much earlier.

In Kenny Dalglish’s second stint as manager he was given a bag of cash and the job of going out and signing all of the best young talent in Europe. During this time the name Mario Gotze popped up on the scouting record and Kenny was apparently urged to sign the young German. In the end though it came down to a choice between Gotze and a young English player by the name of Jordan Henderson.

Although Kenny was on the look out for youth he also wanted players with proven EPL experience and with Henderson already a regular in the Sunderland set up it was him that we spent 20 million GBP on instead. Of course we love Hendo now, but with more than a little bit of hindsight it would have been great to get Mario in as well.

Imagine what a young hungry Gotze could have done alongside a ravenous Luis Suarez, it’s pretty hard to stomach I know. Surely the young German would have come at a bargain price as well with his name not yet well-known around the world.

If you think about the signings Dalglish made that summer he probably could have saved his job with by cutting back on the likes of Stuart Downing and Charlie Adam. But let’s be honest King Kenny has never been known for his shrewdness in the transfer market. Remember David Speedie and Glenn Hysen, exactly.
