Liverpool do need to make new signings before the transfer window shuts. Yet manager Jürgen Klopp is right not to panic buy.

Reports say Liverpool are still set on signing long-term targets Virgil Van Dijk and Naby Keita. Both players have reportedly told their current employers that they want out and that Liverpool is their preferred destination. Stop me if you’ve heard this one!

With a week to go until the start of the season it’s fair to say that I’m over the same stories being rehashed every day in the press. But what’s more annoying is Liverpool fans demanding that Klopp move his attentions elsewhere and make what I see as panic buys before the season starts. In my experience nothing good comes from making last minute decisions in the transfer market and reds fans should be fully aware of how badly it can go.

Remember when we signed Andy Carroll on a whim after the sale of Fernando Torres? Or the 20 million GBP signing of Stuart Downing after first choice Ashley Young joined Manchester Utd? How about the signing of Mario Balotelli after missing out on Alexis Sanchez?

I understand certain positions need better quality. I also understand the squad needs more depth. If we are to truly push for the title but there is no point in splashing cash for the sake of it. Jurgen Klopp has always stated that he would never spend just because the money is there. He wants the right pieces to fit his jigsaw. He wants style, he wants quality, but more importantly he wants players that are desperate to play for him and the club while having a desire to improve as individuals. If he doesn’t see these things he wont spend any cash.

It’s something I respect him for and so should everybody else. We remember the failed spending sprees of Graeme Souness, Kenny Dalglish and Brendan Rodgers. Numerous false dawns have not led to a league title since 1990. I urge fans to be patient with the manager. Building a dynasty can take time and I have full faith that this is what Klopp is after.

Since he took over improvement has been constant. Even now we’ve had an amazing pre-season. New signings Andy Robertson, Mohamed Salah and Dominic Solanke have slotted in nicely. If we can keep Coutinho, Watford will be in trouble when the English Premier League kicks off next week.
