Ben Woodburn scored four minutes into his international debut to hand Wales a vital 1-0 win against Austria.

The 17-year-old Liverpool prodigy had just been introduced into the game by Chris Coleman before he picked up the ball just outside the area and smashed it into the bottom corner of the goal.

Woodburn has already become the Reds’ youngster every goal scorer with his effort against Leeds United in the EFL Cup quarter-final last campaign and the England-born forward has been with the cup since he was eight – reported the Mirror.

The hype machine went into overdrive following his strike, and Coleman thinks his new player can become a great – before adding an understandable caveat.

“He has all the attributes to go on to be a great player,” the BBC reported that he said, “I know how tough the industry is. Ben knows how much work he has to get through”.

The Wales manager continued:  “He’s made a good start. With young players I would not like to say. Good examples are George Williams and Jon Williams, they’re still young and have to play a lot of football”.

Meanwhile, the website wrote that Woodburn thought he would struggle for sleep after such an exhilarating moment.

“The ball just came out of the air and I just tried to shoot it as quickly as I could,” he explained. “It’s a great feeling, I couldn’t ask for much more from the fans. I won’t sleep tonight.”
