Phil Thompson

Phil ‘Tommo’ Thompson is an absolute giant of the game and remains relevant today through his punditry work.

The defender made 477 Liverpool appearances with just 13 goals to his name, but he made up for it with his massive haul of 14 league and cup triumphs with his hometown team.

Thompson signed professional terms in January 1971 and made his debut one year later against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Alongside Emlyn Hughes, Thompson formed a formidable back line and it is of no surprise that league championship wins came in 1979 and 1980.

“I regard Phil as one of the best possible examples of a true professional,” lfchistory.net reported that Bob Paisley once said. “His greatest asset as a player is his ability to read the game, he showed that gift even as a teenager.”
