These are the 20 Liverpool legends you want to have back in defense
Tommy Smith
Born in 1945, Tommy Smith emerged out of the rubble of a post-World War Two Liverpool to be one of their shining lights.
A local lad, the club was in his blood and the tough tackler made 638 appearances in all competitions, scoring 48 goals.
After starting his career up front, he moved back into defence and thrived there. He was made captain of the team by Bill Shankley, but was replaced by Emlyn Hughes in 1973.
His versatility meant that Smith was able to remain at the club even into his 30s when his position was under threat.
In order to gain an edge over the opposition, he utalised his reputation as hard man and even handed Tottenham Hotspur striker Jimmy Greaves a copy of the menu from the Liverpool Infirmary as a threat.
