Three ways that Liverpool could rotate against Leicester in the Carabao Cup
Ward / Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Lovren, Flanagan / Ejaria, Henderson, Coutinho / Oxlade-Chamberlain, Solanke, Woodburn
In this lineup, Ward would remain in goal. Trent Alexander-Arnold struggled against Burnley, but he’d feature at right back. Development in football is not linear; it has its up-and-downs and Trent will learn with each one. Gomez remains at centreback, but he is accompanied by Dejan Lovren, who was left on the bench last weekend with a sore back. Flanagan switches flanks, going back to where he shined in the 2013-2014 season.
In midfield, Klopp returns to his preferred 4-3-3. Jordan Henderson returns as the deepest midfielder after being rested during the weekend. He’s flanked by Ovie Ejaria, making his first appearance for the Reds this season, and Philippe Coutinho. Ejaria is a tidy passer and diligent tracker, while Coutinho would give Klopp’s side that creative spark and build up his match fitness in the process.
In attack, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Ben Woodburn would play either side of Dominic Solanke. This is a flexible front three with The Ox and Woodburn able to provide depth, tuck in, or drop deeper.
Solanke features as the lone striker after Daniel Sturridge’s poor showing against Burnley. A defence as rigid as Leicester’s is a big test for Solanke, but he will need to be tested if he wants to make it to the next level.
