Number 15: Glen Johnson

After Liverpool had come so close to winning the Premier League in 2008/9 there was much hope going into the beginning of the next season that Liverpool were back and going to challenge again. Some of that belief came as Liverpool spent a record £20 million fee on a right back.

Glen Johnson was an exciting signing as he would bring pace and attacking threat that Arbeloa did not. Benitez had wanted to sign a marauding right back for over year and had narrowly missed out on Daniel Alves to Barcelona.

Johnson was the Aldi Alves. The whole team sank in 2009/10 as Benitez time at the club came to the end. It wasn’t until Brendan Rodgers arrived that Liverpool started seeing more from the Englishman as he played a regular role in the amazing title run of the 2013/14 season. @davidgatesports

Number 14: Fabio Aurelio

The first ever Brazilian to play for Liverpool football club he had a career at Anfield. He played 134 for the Reds across six seasons. Only injuries prevented him from being a player fans consider to be a legend.

He is perhaps the most technically gifted player to play at left back for the club. Yes even more than Alberto Moreno!

His most famous moment for the club came in the 4-1 victory at Old Trafford that set off Liverpool’s title challenge in 2009. We were 2-1 up in a competitive game before Aurelio curled a peach of a free kick into the top corner. Van der Sar was glued helpless.

In a crowd of left backs of recent years including Dossena, Konchesky, Milner, Insua, Moreno and Enrique  – Fabio Aurelio now has a semi-cult status as a left who was actually good! @davidgatesports
